Between 2022 and 2025, Carrick was at the helm of Middlesbrough, with Harkney serving as a member of the squad. Reflecting on those times, he recounted, "Carrick placed a strong emphasis on possession-based tactics, which were particularly effective in the Championship, as we maintained a high possession rate."
